Santa’s Little Storage Helper For The Salvo’s North Brisbane Church
For many people, Christmas is a time of joy, celebration, family and connection. But, sadly, for many others, it is a time of hardship.
Every Christmas, The Salvation Army work tirelessly reaching out to families and individuals by providing food hampers and gifts during this particularly tough time.
We are proud to have been able to help The Salvation Army North Brisbane Church with their 2017 Christmas Appeal.
For over 6 years now, Craig Todd, North Brisbane Church Leader, and his dedicated team have been living the true spirit of Christmas and bringing joy to around 180 needy families in their community.
In the months leading up to Christmas, the Church collects donations of food and toys from Church members and the wider community. As donations are collected, the volunteer team work tirelessly behind the scenes sorting and packing the donated items into hampers, ready for delivery to families in need of support.
The Church has created an efficient system where prepared shopping lists are added to a Wishing Tree. Each list covers several items of non-perishable food; and by spreading the collection period over several months, numerous smaller shopping lists can be filled, amounting to enough donated food and items to ease the burden and bring joy to approximately 500 people. That is a lot of food; and a lot of community love and care!
When reflecting on the 2017 program, Craig stated that he is “blessed with a great team”. Such a strong volunteer base has a strong and profound impact on the local community.
How did PODS storage help?
Using a PODS storage container solved a logistical issue for The Salvation Army North Brisbane Church. The storage container worked as a central collection and sorting point for donated items.
The size and portable nature of the PODS storage container, and its positioning, were critical. A large 16” PODS container was placed on Church grounds to allow for a car trailer to be backed up to the container and unloaded. Donated items were securely stored inside the container until the Volunteer team could sort them into hampers and packages ready for distribution. In Craig’s words, the whole operation ran like a “well oiled machine”.
And the donations didn’t just stop at Christmas hampers and gifts. Second hand goods and items for recycling continued to be donated for sale at the Church’s Thrift Shop. The generosity of people over Christmas saw an influx of donated items, and this created a need to store them until the Thrift Shop reopened mid-January.
It was a pleasure to be able to support The Salvos and the North Brisbane Church with their 2017 Christmas Appeal, and we look forward to continuing this support well into the future.
